Synopsis - Death (page 1)

Actually, if you want to be plain, there isn't much to say about the true version of Evangelion: Death. Death is in fact a short summary of all the episodes (except episodes 25 and 26), and has a duration of approximately 60 minutes. There is 15 minutes of new material in Death. It was created to inform the people who hadn't seen the series, so they're not completely held in the dark about the secrets of NGE when Rebirth came into the cinemas. Rebirth is a direct-follow up of Death, or episode 24, but more about that in Synopsis: Rebirth.

I made this Synopsis about Death so that you can finally read what HAPPENED in Death, instead of hearing a lousy sentence, like: "Death is a 60 minutes summary of the episodes." Here you can read what REALLY happened, almost to the letter  (Doing it literally by the letter would be really TOO much work, hehe).

Synopsis: Death (first half)

"...The First Angel, high above the skies..."

We see a video-recording of a meeting on Antarctica, during the Katsuragi-expidition. Some scientists are talking about the dangers of Katsuragi's S² Theory. "It's way too radical." The SEELE commitee and Gendo Ikari are watching the tape. They're discussing the way the scientists acted on Antarctica.

Then, a massive disaster strikes the expidition. Misato's father brings Misato into safety by putting her in an escape-capsule. A few seconds later, an enormous explosion destroys Antarctica. Misato comes out of her escape-capsule and sees Adam, the first Angel, high above the skies.

15 years later, she's sleeping with Kaji. She tells him that one day she'll completely disrespect herself for being obscene. Kaji tells her that she musn't think that way; "Being lustful is as much real to me, as a person." Misato says that Kaji and she are very much a like.

9 Months before, Kaji was looking at the stars. Asuka: "We'll be in Japan tommorow. Misato told me that she would pick me up at noon." She regrets it that she will not see Kaji for a while. It'll be boring. Kaji tells her that she'll meet some boyfriends in Japan. Asuka: "I told you that I'm not interested in some kid. The only one I like is Mr. Kaji."

7 Years ago, Asuka was running in a room. She was yelling at her mother that she was picked to be an elite pilot and save Humankind! It is a secret, but she's only telling her mother about it. But when she entered the room, she sees her mother, hanging from the ceiling. She hung herself. Asuka is shocked and looks with big eyes at her dead mother.

Now, in the present, Asuka is sitting in her Entry Plug in her Eva Unit 02. Maya and Ritsuko see from the readings that she has troubles maintaining synchronisation. It is only at 8 points. That's trouble. Ritsuko: "I think we'd better go with that prototype model". (Eva Unit 01, which is piloted by Shinji Ikari.)

Some years back, we see a 9 year old Rei, being introduced by Gendo Ikari to Ritsuko and her mother. Ritsuko's mother is surprised she's not a boy. Gendo explains she's not Shinji and says that he's been asked to keep her for a while. "She is Rei Ayanami."
 

5 years later, Rei sees Shinji again. He's waiting for Misato, who's going to pick him up and bring him to Nerv to see his father. When Shinji looks down the street, he sees Rei for a split second, but when he looks another way and then looks back, she's gone.

"...When Shinji looks down the street, he sees Rei..."

Then, suddenly, the Third Angel attacks. Shinji is trapped in the crossfire that's been launched to stop the Angel (without much result). 
Once in Nerv, Shinji is in the cage where the protoype Eva, unit 01 is. The Angel's shooting causes some big girders to fall down, what caused Rei to fall down from her brancard.
Shinji runs towards her, and holds her, when he suddenly sees her blood on his fingers. He tells himself numerous times not to run away.

A few months later, he's forced to make a decision. Shinji's Eva Unit 01 holds Kaoru in his hand, and is asked by Kaoru, who appeared to be an Angel not so long ago, to kill him. Shinji is confused, and doesn't know what to do.
18 Months before. Shinji is playing in a dark room at the Nagano Prefecture some classical music. 

Now we see how the Eva unit 01 is prepared to battle the Angel who is in Tokyo-3. This is Shinji's first encounter with an Angel, and with his Eva. The Angel takes advantage of Shinji's inexperience, and spikes him to a nearby buidling. All activity in the Eva has ceased, and they don't know if the pilot's still alive. Nerv has lost all control over the Eva. Suddenly, the Eva is reactivating. But they hadn't done anything. The Eva is totally operating by itself when it destroys the Angel with little effort. 
Ritsuko: "That must be Eva's true power." 

Shinji moves in into Misato's house. He doesn't feel too happy about it at first.

Many years earlier, maybe 12 or so, Misato Katsuragi is the only survivor of the Katsuragi expiditon. She's been silent for years, hasn't spoke a word. Fuyutsuki and a doctor are talking about her. Fuyutsuki is not surprised about her aphasia: "She must have seen hell, the real one." 

Later, when Misato is about twenty-something years old, she meets Ritsuko for the first time. She speaks a lot now. Ritsuko: "It's like she's making up for the lost time when she had aphasia." Now we hear young Misato talking about herself. She really wants to be a good girl, but she can't. It's not her. She says she hates her father. She hates to be nice.
Shinji about Misato: "She isn't a bad person." 

Life has been very turbulent for Shinji since he came to Tokyo-3. At first, he didn't have any purpose to live. But he does what he has been told to do, even piloting Eva. Misato isn't too happy about it. 
 

"...When the Forth Angel attacked, Shinji defeated it with only one second in the internal batteries to spare..."

When the Fourth Angel attacked, Shinji defeated it with only one second in the internal batteries to spare. But it was a huge stress on him, and after a few days, he has run away. He wanders around for days through Tokyo-3, and after a while, he stumbles upon his classmate, Kenzuke Aida. They become friends.

Kenzuke really envies Shinji, because he can pilot Eva and lives in one house with such a beautiful woman as Misato. The next day, Nerv Intelligence is at Kenzuke's tent to get Shinji. Back at Nerv, Misato scolds Shinji for running away. She asks him if he still wants to be a Eva pilot. If not, he can leave. So he does. But at the very last moment, just when the train which he must board arrives, he decides to stay. Shinji gets 4 days off to relax and get his mind off his work.

While Shinji is lying in bed, listening to music, Asuka crawls into his bed, and falls asleep. 
Shinji can't do anything except look at her while his walkman rewinds very fast. Just when he wants to kiss her, she turns around in her sleep. "Mama," she says. Shinji, grumbling and mumbling: "You're just a kid, too."

A short summary about Asuka follows. Asuka is: stuck up, insolent, conceited, selfish, vain, multi-personal and self-conscious. Asuka is showing Shinji her Eva when suddenly a Angel attacks the fleet which is transporting the Eva Unit 02. 
After that, we see all kinds off short clips with Eva Unit 02 in it, showing off. 

We see Asuka and Rei at the school yard. Asuka greets Shinji and then asks him where the First Child is, Rei Ayanami. When Shinji points out where she is,  Asuka says to Rei: "We'll be best friends!" Rei: "If that's an order, I'll follow it."

For a mission to destroy an Angel that has been split in two different beings, it's imperative that Asuka and Shinji synchronise with eachother, so that they can operate at the same time, doing the same things. They also need to learn a dance. It doesn't go well, and Misato asks Rei to dance with Shinji. That goes much better. Asuka looks at it with growing amazement. 

We take a preview. Asuka's mental condition is worsening, and she can't pilote her Eva anymore. Her pride has been crushed. She lost the last battle horribly. Both arms and head of her Eva were cut of by the latest Angel... 
In a elevator with Rei, Rei tells Asuka that Eva won't move if she doesn't open her heart. Asuka gets mad and is disappointed that she, and not for example Shinji sympathises with her. She calls Rei a doll. Rei disagrees. Asuka: "You just obey orders! If Commandor Ikari orders you to die, you'll follow it." Rei: "Yes."

Shinji is getting more and more interested in his mysterious co-pilot, the silent Rei. His friends notice him looking at her, and ask him why. Shinji: "I'm just thinking why she's always alone." Ritsuko tells Shinji that she thinks that Rei isn't so adapted to living. 
Shinji is going to Rei's appartment to bring her her new security-card, but everything goes wrong and eventually, he ends up on top of a naked Rei. Shinji is paralised and can't move, until Rei asks him to get off. He totally forgets why he is there. 

Later, he asks her on the automatic stairs if she's not afraid to pilot her Eva. She asks him if he trusts his won father's work. Shinji: "Of course not! How can I ever trust him?" Rei slaps him for that. 
 

Later that day, after Shinji got hurt in a new Angel attack, Rei briefs him about the new plan, designed by Misato. Shinji doesn't want to do it. Later he will. While we see Rei and Shinji in their Eva's fighting the powerful Angel who almost cost Shinji his life, we hear Shinji ask Rei why she pilotes her Eva. She tells him it's a bond, to all people. She has nothing else.

"...She starts to cry..."

Shinji tells her after the battle, where Rei almost perished, that she musn't say such things. This is very emotional, and Rei tells Shinji she doesn't know what to say or think at times like these. Shinji: "Why don't you try smiling?" She did. 
A lot of dramatic events happened with and around Eva Unit 00. When a Angel, shaped in a bundle of light attacks Rei, there is nothing she can do. Asuka can't help, because she has lost faith and only has a synchronisation rate of 0. The stress is rising, and Rei is thinking about her life. She starts to cry.

And she's surprised about that. When Shinji arrives at the scene and the Angel wants to attack him too, Rei realises that she loves Shinji and commits suicide to destroy the Angel and save Shinji and Tokyo-3.
